Divorce and Passwords!

You’ve separated. You shared all your personal information. Now what?

Changing all your passwords is a no-brainer but here’s a kicker, for any password recovery you need to enter your personal information. Your ex knows all of this personal information, right? They can, potentially, recover many of your passwords by entering your personal information. This can cause chaos for you. Not only is it a privacy breach but it's also a security breach when someone (who is likely quite angry and emotional) gains access to your accounts.

Here's a trick, write a fake story about your life. Include fake information on your birthday, birth town, hometown, school, university degree, children, favourite movies, colours, first car, etc… everything.

Use this story to answer the security questions when you register all new passwords.

This will mitigate any potential damage your ex could do in the future.

I keep this fake story locked away in my file cabinet and when I need to recover my own passwords I simply retrieve it to find the answers to all my password recovery questions.

I hope this helps. If you have any ideas or experiences in this regard, I’d love to hear from you.

Stay safe and secure!
